RHP’s laboratory in Elk Grove Village provides light microscopy capabilities for analytical services such as asbestos testing, microbial (mold) analysis, and fire residue (char/soot/ash) evaluations of building materials. RHP’s scientists use Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) and reflected light stereo-microscopy techniques to evaluate material samples and help answer important questions that inform scopes of work for contractor renovations and property remediation on insurance loss claims. Our state-of-the-art laboratory includes modern equipment such as Leica microscopes with digital image capture capabilities so that observations and findings are defensibly documented. The laboratory is equipped with a HEPA-filtered fume-hood to handle hazardous materials like asbestos, mold, BSL-1 pathogens, metals, acids, solvents, and flammables.

RHP’s light microscopy laboratory is accredited by the United States Department of Commerce under the National Institute of Standards and Technology Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NIST/NVLAP). RHP’s accreditation under NIST/NVLAP conforms to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 for the analysis of asbestos in building materials. RHP’s scope of accreditation covers EPA Method 600/R-93/116 “Method for the Determination of Asbestos in Building Materials” and EPA 40 CRF Appendix E to Subpart E of Part 763, “Interim Method of the Determination of Asbestos in Bulk Insulation Samples.”

All of RHP’s analysts have received microscopy training at the world renowed McCrone Research Institute in Chicago and participate in quarterly quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) programs offered through the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) such as the Industrial Hygiene Proficiency Analytical Testing (IHPAT) and Asbestos Analysis Testing (AAT) proficiency programs.
