Clearing the Air: Understanding Silica Exposures

Session Details

Session W21 · Wednesday, September 16, 2026 · 3:00–4:30 p.m.
Northern Illinois University, Naperville campus
RHP presenters: Kiana Porter, Allison Persing, and Betty Wu

The session will examine why respirable crystalline silica remains an important occupational health concern. Attendees will receive an overview of the regulatory framework, the role of exposure assessment, and the hierarchy of controls used to reduce worker exposure. The presentation will also draw on practical experience and RHP research to illustrate how employers can evaluate controls, identify gaps, and strengthen silica exposure control programs over time.

How RHP Supports Silica Risk Management

RHP Risk Management’s Certified Industrial Hygienists, exposure scientists, and safety professionals help organizations identify, evaluate, and control respirable crystalline silica and other occupational exposures. RHP provides scientifically sound and defensible support tailored to each workplace, including exposure assessments and personal air monitoring, review of engineering and work practice controls, OSHA compliance support, written exposure control plans, respiratory protection program assistance, employee training, and interpretation of industrial hygiene data.

RHP also combines field-based industrial hygiene experience with exposure science and applied research capabilities. This integrated approach helps clients move from sampling results to practical risk-management decisions, verify whether controls are performing as intended, and establish programs that account for changing tasks, materials, equipment, and operating conditions.
