Key Takeaways: Product Stewardship Services

Lifecycle Coverage

RHP Risk Management delivers product safety and stewardship support across the entire product lifecycle, from development to end-of-life, helping manufacturers manage the health, safety, and environmental impacts of their products and chemicals.

Integrated Science

We integrate exposure science, toxicology, and regulatory expertise to evaluate product safety and support compliance, including alignment with OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200), Permissible Exposure Limits (29 CFR 1910 Subpart Z), and personal protective equipment standards (29 CFR 1910.132).

Defensible Data

Our approach produces defensible data that inform product design, regulatory submissions, workplace controls, safety standards, and stewardship strategies.

Actionable Solutions

Clients rely on RHP to translate complex scientific and regulatory requirements into actionable solutions.

What is Product Stewardship?

Product stewardship covers a wide range of activities, from sourcing raw materials, transporting materials and products, production, and assembly, to consumer use considerations and end-of-life considerations. As more products enter the marketplace and their production and manufacturing come under greater scrutiny, product stewardship has become increasingly important.

Why Does Product Stewardship Matter?

Chemical regulation is an important component of a holistic product stewardship program. It applies to all companies regardless of industry and covers chemicals used to maintain facilities (for example, housekeeping products, greases and lubricants, and combustibles) as well as raw or composite materials in a final product. Product stewardship programs can clearly detail and manage chemicals throughout the product lifecycle. They give a company transparency into its compliance with chemical regulations and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) requirements, and may strengthen worker safety programs, including appropriate PPE and hazard communication.

How RHP Supports Product Safety & Stewardship

Product Safety Evaluation

We evaluate chemical risks associated with raw materials and finished products using exposure modeling, dose-response analysis, benchmark dose modeling, and PBPK modeling to characterize hazard and exposure relationships. Our experts use sophisticated, accepted methods to model materials and substances of concern, including process evaluation, SDS review, and hazardous storage advisement.

Exposure Science Integration

Our A2LA Accredited Exposure Sciences Laboratory (ESL) supports stewardship by providing product testing, exposure monitoring, and simulation studies that quantify chemical exposures during manufacturing and consumer use. To produce reliable, reproducible, and transparent exposure risk measurements, RHP professionals use a tiered modeling approach and perform exposure simulation studies on products in the laboratory.

Regulatory Strategy and Compliance

We develop product stewardship strategies aligned with state, federal, and international requirements, and help companies reach and maintain compliance. This includes evaluating formulations, preparing supporting documentation, and guiding compliance with evolving regulatory frameworks, including workplace controls that meet OSHA requirements.

Safer Alternatives and Product Optimization

We identify safer and more sustainable alternatives by evaluating substitution feasibility, product compatibility, and potential impacts on human health and the environment.

Lifecycle Risk Management

We evaluate product impacts across the lifecycle, including manufacturing, use, and end-of-life considerations, and design systems that manage and document the use of manufacturing constituents from birth to death. These assessments support labeling, warnings, and safe-use communication aligned with public health and environmental objectives.

What RHP Delivers

  • Product safety and chemical risk evaluations grounded in exposure science and toxicology.
  • Stewardship strategies that support regulatory compliance and lifecycle management.
  • Exposure and risk data to inform formulation decisions and safer alternatives.
  • Regulatory support for labeling, documentation, and chemical management requirements.
  • Audits and enhancements of existing stewardship systems, and development of new systems.
  • Defensible, science-based solutions that support sustainable product stewardship and business objectives.

Experience Across Industries

RHP professionals have decades of experience mitigating risks and managing occupational and environmental hazards in industries including construction, manufacturing, healthcare, food production, automotive, agriculture, cannabis, and personal care products.

Who is Affected by Product Stewardship?

Producers

Manufacturers of raw materials and end products in many industries are directly affected by state, national, and international regulations that require transparency about ingredients, chemical waste, and by-products. These requirements can influence a company’s ability to produce, manufacture, and sell products in regions around the world.

Consumers

Consumers, or end users, are affected by a product’s utility, residual effects, waste impact, and expected lifetime. Community members and the environment are also affected as products reach the end of their intended use and enter the waste stream. Consumer confidence can suffer when concerns about potential consumer exposure are reported. When stewardship concerns are not considered and mitigated, a product’s success can be undermined by consumer exposures or environmental and community impacts.

Governance

Analyzing a product’s lifecycle can provide insight into regulatory concerns at the local, state, national, and international levels. Governance of product stewardship encompasses public health and environmental concerns, as well as communication through proper labeling, warnings, and safe-use advertising. Stewardship strategies also encourage companies to build efficient, effective, and high-impact production pipelines.
